PrimeFish participates in the Conference on Economic Advice in Fisheries Management
For two days PrimeFish presented its work in the poster section of the Conference on Economic Advice in Fisheries Management. Other 47 posters were also present in an event, which joined politicians, economists, ONGs, industries and scientists. The Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, also known as DG MARE, organized the event together with the University of Malta and the European Association of Fisheries Economists.
Karmenu Vella, Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, pointed in his speech the importance of supporting European policies with sound data and the need for developing new tools to improve the quality of fisheries analysis and advice. The PrimeFish project works to meet these needs as it main outcome will be a decision support system that will offer advice on success factors, demand, price development, competition, value chain and growth analysis.
Interested audience were able to follow the conference through social media and participate in interactive activities, such as the poster contest, in which PrimeFish ranked high thanks to numerous endorsements.
The conference held debates and round tables about international experiences, global drivers, the economic evaluation of ecosystem services, the chain supply or the role of economic advice in sustainable fisheries. The new director-general for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Joao Aguiar Machado closed the meeting pointing out the need for “available, accurate and timely data” that will balance decisions that have been too based in biology.
