A project on seafood safety takes home the business project prize in the European Seafood Economy Summer School

During 5 days, more than 10 international participants took part in the European Seafood Economy Summer School, the short course organised by the PrimeFish project in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences of Bremenhaven (Germany). Experts in international seafood economy and marketing explored topics such as the economic performance of seafood industries, the seafood value chain, international trade, product development and market research.

On-hands training

Industry representatives of Royal Greenland, TransGourmet, Fish International and Bundesmarktverbandder Fischwirtschaft e.V. shared their experiences with the participants. Practical training was one of the key aspects of this course, with participants taking part in a blind tasting and playing the role of a mystery shopper of seafood products in the German supermarket Edeka. A Business Lab was organised during the afternoons to support the development of business proposals following the Business Model Canvas.

Pitching session

Participants’ skills to pitch their projects and convince a panel of professionals were tested on the last day of the course . The team composed by George and Julen and their proposal of a sensor to guarantee seafood safety was awarded as the best project. Gerd Bollmann, marketing manager of Royal Greenland in Germany, participated in the assessment of the projects that he qualified as “all competitive, innovative and adapted to the needs of the industry”.

A tool to back business proposals: the PrimeDSS

All participants were able to use the seafood market-oriented tool PrimeDSS to back their business proposals with insights on the structure of the seafood value chain or consumers’ preferences.

Presentations are available in the Learning resources centre of the PrimeFish website.
