PrimeFish scientists start their work on products, consumers and market trends

Consumer behavior, market trends and innovation play a key role in the success or failure of new seafood products in the European market. All of these topics will be in the agenda of the next PrimeFish meeting, which will be held from 24th to 25th September in the headquarters of the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) in Paris.

Scientists in the PrimeFish project will deepen on the reasons behind market trends through full range consumers’ studies and case studies on farmed and captured fish (salmon, trout, sea bass, sea bream, herring and cod). In this meeting, scientists will design five studies in order to achieve the milestones planned for the Work Package 4.

From the demand side, a study will focus on the reasons behind a consumer behavior, customers’ perception of different species and substitutive products for seafood. Furthermore, individual studies will address consumers’ habits, the impact of the context over the choice of products and the key influencers on this selection. From the product side, they will target six species (salmon, trout, seabass, seabream, herring and cod) to find the motives and barriers behind their consumption. Past and current market trends, seafood labelling, and success and failure stories will be also taken into account.

All of this data will feed a web-based tool which will forecast the European seafood market and that will be available by 2019.
